Independence means different things to different people. For some, it is the ability to make decisions separate from the influence of an authority figure. For others, it is the ability to survive on their own. As a nation, July 4th is the day where we celebrate our national independence. It is the time that figuratively signals our birth as a country. On this day we celebrate our rights and freedoms. As Christians, we also have an independence day to celebrate- the day when we found Jesus.
Our spiritual independence is not about the ability to survive on our own. It is not about being independent of Jesus. It is about being independent from sin. Sin enslaved us (Co. 2:13; Romans 3:23-24), Jesus delivered us.
There are many things in our country that are not perfect and there are many things in our lives that are not perfect. However, we are free. We are free to make decisions, to express our opinions, to follow the group or to follow our heart, to follow Jesus or follow the world. We are free.
How are you going to celebrate your spiritual freedom today?
